About You:
I'm currently studying for an MEng in Computer Games Design at Staffordshire University, but with the inordinate amount of spare time I get I alternate between working part-time, writing original and fan fiction, learning guitar and playing Ultimate Frisbee. I'm a restless person by nature, so I enjoy being busy and travelling around. I used to study and practice Drama and Theatre Studies, so becoming a voice actor seemed the next logical step once I moved away to university.
I'm also a life-long Doctor Who fan thanks to my dad; as well as suiting his Irish heritage, my name 'Tegan' was inspired by Janet Fielding's 'mouth on legs' character.
Your Role in Doctor Who Audios:
I play the somewhat tomboyish Alice Morgan
What was life before Alice
Life before Alice involved a lot more writing! I had to stop both my dance and drama classes once I moved to university, but I was able to keep up with my hobby of writing stories and scripts. I'd been doing voice acting work for about two years before Alice came along, having been part of two different series for another producer. As a life-long Doctor Who fan, finding the audition for Alice was like a dream come true.
How did you get the part of Alice?
I had just finished one series and was looking for another role to take on during the series hiatus. The magical words 'Doctor Who' jumped out at me from the pages of the Voice Acting Alliance, and I recorded my interview lines straight away. I actually sent two sets, one in my very bad Welsh accent and another in the accent she actually has now. Luckily I was sent an email to say the non-Welsh version would be great, and that I had been offered the role.
What were your immediate impressions of the Character?
Alice seemed to be the semi-streetwise and sometimes fiesty young girl that I like to relate to. She had an almost ceaselessly inquisitive mind, and a sarcastic streak that I adored from the offset. She reminded me of a number of companions from the classic TV series, and from the first reading of the first script I got the impression it was a character I would have immense fun playing.
Do you enjoy playing her?
Definitely! There are times when her behaviour and responses are so similar to what my own would be that I can play her almost instinctively. There have been parts in some scripts that have made me laugh out loud, and trying to do them justice as Alice was a real treat.
Where do you want to go with Alice in the Audios? Alice is pending to appear in Series 3 and potentially start her own for-profit audio series
I'd love for Alice to appear in Series 3 as I think there are still some hidden depths that haven't been fully drawn on, especially in terms of how she continues to deal with the more technical issues of travelling in time and dealing with alien people and cultures.
As for her own series, I think it would open up a whole new universe of possibilities for Alice; it may be a chance to see her in a different light as she tries to handle 'unearthly' things without a knowledgeable figure like the Doctor around. In a similar way to Sarah-Jane, I think it might allow the audience to get glimpses of Alice's background and to see why she is the way she is.
In your mind what is the relationship between “Alice” and “The Doctor”
In many ways, I think Alice sees the Doctor as a cross between one of the professors at her university and a kind of eccentric friend. She has a respect for his vast array of knowledge; but she has also seen that he is not completely infallible, which makes him seem that little bit more human and on a level where she's happy to tease him almost as much as she is Chand.
Do you like David's take on The Doctor?
Very much so. The spontaneity and flitting train of thoughts that someone like the Doctor needs are right there, as is the perfect balance between showing off and being the person with the know-how to get them out of scrapes.
How do you see Alice and Chand’s relationship?
There's a very close bond between the two of them, but I think the line is a tiny bit blurry when it comes to the 'friends-only' debate! I love how they look out for each other and the almost sibling-like squabbling and teasing that goes on. There's sometimes a bit of a competitive edge to be the one with the right answer when talking with the Doctor, and to me that is really typical of the university friends.
